Analytics
KnowYourReps uses Umami Cloud, a cookieless analytics service, loaded from cloud.umami.is and reporting to gateway.umami.is — and only on knowyourreps.io. It records page views: the page address, including any search words in it (such as a bill search), the referring page, and visit length.
It also records three events, none of which carry the address or ZIP you typed, or a district number:
- district set, with how it was set (address, ZIP, ZIP pick or map) and the state
- ZIP choices shown, with the count and the state (or "multi")
- lookup failed, with the reason
An ad blocker that blocks the script stops all of it.
Looking up your district
The text you type goes to our server in a POST request body, never a URL. A street address is forwarded to the U.S. Census Geocoder (geocoding.geo.census.gov); a bare ZIP code is forwarded to Census TIGERweb (tigerweb.geo.census.gov). Our server uses the text for the lookup only and does not log or store it.
To rate-limit address lookups, bill searches and the site's other data requests, our server keeps your IP address in memory only: it is never written to disk or to our logs, and it is cleared when the server restarts.
Stored in your browser, not on our server
Your browser's local storage (not sent to us) holds the text you typed — an address or ZIP, or for a ZIP pick, the ZIP plus the district you chose, e.g. "11372 (NY-14)" — the state and district it resolved to, and a district-map version marker, under the key civic:personalization:v1.
If you dismissed the setup panel on a return visit, a flag under the key civic:onboarding:dismissed:v1 may also be stored, with no location data in it.
To show your representatives, your browser sends only your state and district number — never your address — to our server, in the address of the request. If the district map is updated, your browser re-sends your saved text for a fresh lookup.
How to clear it
Open your district (the district button in the site header, or "change" on the home page) and press ✕ in the field. That removes your saved address and district. Clearing this site's data in your browser settings removes everything above, including the dismissed flag — the ✕ alone does not remove the flag.
